What makes an activity a community service?
Each service focuses on people’s immediate needs.
So, what do our different services have in common? Some of the characteristics that all of our services share include:
- We all work with people at times of vulnerability in their lives, offering opportunities and support for personal, camily and community growth and development
- Our client’s goals — and therefore our goals — are to live as independently as possible as valued and contributing members of their community.
- We build hope, working with the resources the client and community already have — often referred to as a ‘strengths based approach’
- We work with people in the community — locating our services in the local community in which our clients live
- We enable people to connect with community — helping people to connect with peer groups, develop relationship skills, re-connect with family, and access local services and groups
- We are characterized as ‘not for profit’ or ‘welfare’. We channel resources — from government, from our sponsers, from individuals — to benefit the Community Services, Wesley Mission We work in partership with other organisations and services in the local community to meet the complex needs of our clients
- As part of our local community, we contribute to the development and well being of the whole community, not just those who come to us as clients.
